More revenue pain for providers on the horizon?

The revenue losses for healthcare providers may not be over yet. While most have seen lost revenue due to the nationwide shutdown, they may also see cuts from state Medicaid programs who are in turn losing revenue.

The next question is whether CMS follow through with proposed cuts to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule that were first signaled in 2019. Before the COVID pandemic, the biggest issue facing most providers was the proposed 2021 fee schedule changes expected to be released this fall. Typically, there is a proposed fee schedule presented in July, a period of public comment is allowed, and then the final changes are noted in the November Federal Registry update.

It will be interesting to see how this is handled as we move through this summer. Imagine if CMS follows through on scheduled 8 percent cuts for Radiology and Pathology providers designed to offset boosts to E/M payments. Stay tuned.
