Medicare audits reinstated by CMS

As part of a recently issued coronavirus FAQ, CMS announced that as of Aug. 3 it is resuming prepayment and post-payment audits performed by Medicare Administrative Contractors (MAC), Supplemental Medical Review Contractors, and Recovery Audit Contractors. This includes reviews conducted under the Targeted Probe and Educate (TPE) program.

While these audits had mostly been put on hold since late March due to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, CMS said it is now expects to “discontinue exercising enforcement discretion on August 3, 2020, regardless of the status of the public health emergency.”

If selected for review, CMS recommends reaching out to your MAC to discuss any COVID-related hardships that could affect your response time.
